Will they raise the GET or won’t they? Gubernatorial candidates unclear, Mighty Mo closes for movie, more news

Film crews from the Universal Pictures movie “Battleship” have taken over the state’s resident dreadnought, the Mighty Mo, forcing the Battleship Missouri Memorial Association to close the popular tourist attraction to the public for several days. Star-Advertiser. Hawaii’s Democratic candidates for governor differed Tuesday on raising taxes, with Neil Abercrombie opposing a hike in the general excise tax “without equivocation” and Mufi Hannemann saying such an increase wouldn’t be considered “initially.” Associated Press. Former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, the two leading Democratic candidates for governor, said yesterday that they would not raise the general excise tax to help stabilize the state’s budget. Star-Advertiser. The two leading Democratic candidates for Hawaii governor were asked at a candidates’ forum on Tuesday whether they would raise the state’s general excise tax. KITV. The leading Democratic candidates for Governor traded barbs over business issues at a debate today. KHON2. I like candidate “debates”, even though the definition of that term has been totally bastardized since the days when I participated in the National Forensic Society version when I was in high school and college. Hawaii Reporter. Touring Kauai’s Allerton Gardens

Touring Kauai’s Allerton Gardens

We’ve been making a pleasant habit of visiting botanical gardens in Hawaii. So on our recent visit to Kauai , we planned a visit to Allerton Gardens in the Lawai Valley in Poipu. This Allerton Home is Snuggled By Tropical Plants Allerton Gardens are managed by the National Tropical Botanical Garden. From their website, they describe the heritage of Allerton as “a garden paradise, transformed through time by the hands of a Hawaiian Queen [Queen Emma], by a sugar plantation magnate, and most significantly by an artist and an architect.” Robert Allerton was the artist and his adopted son, John Gregg Allerton, was the architect. Together, their combined talents designed a unique garden concept of outdoor rooms. An example of One of the outdoor rooms designed by the Allertons. Most rooms included a water feature. A guided-tour ($45 per person) leads visitors through garden rooms while explaining the room design, significance to the Allertons, and the types of plants and trees that were chosen. The guided tour includes a 10 to 15-minute tram ride to and from the visitors center to the Lawai Valley and Allerton Garden. The views along the way are truly fantastic and almost worth the visit alone. Lovely Lawa'i Bay In addition to the excellent Lawai Valley views and exploring the garden rooms nestled by the peaceful Lawai Stream, we also enjoyed seeing Queen Emma’s colorful wall of bougainvillea planted by Queen Emma herself.. She retreated to Lawai to morn the loss of her husband and her son. Bright bougainvillea planted by Queen Emma What to know before you go: Guided-tours (2.5 hours duration) are offered daily at four set times (9am, 10am, 1pm, 2pm.) . See this link for more information making reservations to tour Allerton Gardens. I might suggest that you take the 9am tour before the sun warms up the valley too much. Beyond the set tour times, there’s a special sunset tour offered on Thursdays and Saturdays. It’s a little pricier at $60 per person  but it includes pupus (hors d’ouevres) tours of the Allerton’s home. Wear sunscreen, hat, mosquito repellent and comfortable walking shoes. I wore long hiking trousers and I was glad I did as they protected my legs from mosquito bites. Bring water. We had a little trouble finding the entrance to the National Botanical Garden Southshore Visitors Center. But, if you know this, it will be easy for you – the entrance is directly across from the Spouting Horn parking lot. Don’t miss meandering around the Hawaiian Garden at the Visitor’s Center . It’s free and well worth the visit. It’s open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We’re on facebook! Please click here to join us. © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission. Here’s the beef, politics of schools, cliff diving the new hit, more news from around the Hawaiian Islands

With the largest land mass in the Hawaiian Island chain, the Big Island has a long history of huge cattle ranches. West Hawaii Today. Hawaii’s lieutenant governor candidates last night praised the efforts of island charter schools — especially the 16 that avoided Furlough Fridays while absorbing budget cuts — and called for more emphasis on early childhood education, but fell short on coming up with new ways to find money for promising programs. Star-Advertiser. With less than two weeks to go before the primary election, the leading candidates for lieutenant governor took part in a forum Monday night about public education, talking about everything from auditing the state education department to improving early childhood education. KITV . More than half of Hawaii’s public school teachers leave within five years of being hired, a sobering statistic the state is scrambling to address at a time when experienced teachers are needed to help turn around struggling schools, meet federal requirements for “highly qualified” teachers and reach ambitious school reform goals. Star-Advertiser. Twenty-four people have applied for the job of running Hawaii’s public schools. Star-Advertiser. Three Board of Education candidates – two male teachers and a fashion executive who has returned to her native Maui – all promised to visit schools regularly as they explained why they should be elected to serve as a Neighbor Island representative on the policy-making panel for public schools. Maui News. Hawaii congressman Charles Djou officially opened his campaign headquarters Monday on Ward Avenue in Kakaako. KHON2. Hawaii’s 2010 primary election ballot is designed in a way that could confuse voters. It also favors the two major parties at the expense of nonpartisan candidates. Civil Beat. Gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie will swing by Honolulu Hale to cast his vote, since early voting has started. Hawaii News Now. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie says his opponent, Mufi Hannemann’s supporters are using a negative ad and flier to divide the community and attack his character. KITV. Honolulu City Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi is questioning several sub-contracts related to the city’s controversial $5.5 billion rail transit project. KHON2. The race to represent the largest County Council district involves two candidates seeking greater communication, an incumbent who won’t talk to the Tribune-Herald, and a fourth political hopeful pushing job growth. Tribune-Herald. In Hawaii, surfing is known as the “Sport of Kings,” but cliff diving could just as easily have garnered the royal athletic moniker. Tribune-Herald .
