Neil Abercrombie and his predecessor Linda Lingle are clashing over who’s done the better job managing the state’s finances. Civil Beat. Gov. Neil Abercrombie said Thursday that the state is back on track financially, and suggested he would share quarterly reports on state spending to make the budget process more transparent. Star-Advertiser. Two women are suing Hawaii in federal court because they want to be married and not simply have a civil union. Associated Press. Two Honolulu women are suing Gov. Neil Abercrombie and the state health director in federal court over the state’s denial of same-sex marriages. Star-Advertiser. Advocates of the local food movement say increasing the amount of food grown across the islands could benefit the state in several ways, improving both the health and wealth of the state. Oahu About 150,000 Oahu homeowners, including elderly and disabled ones, would lose their property tax exemptions if the City Council adopts politically dicey recommendations made by an advisory panel aiming to bring more equity, fairness and simplicity to the tax system. In less than a year, the tiny Hansen’s disease settlement of Kalaupapa could be the site of the ministry of not one but two Roman Catholic saints. Maui News . Kauai Initial University of Hawai‘i reports estimated that up to 20 million tons of tsunami debris from Japan could reach Hawaiian shores by early 2013, but new findings suggest it may start to arrive as early as next month. The Kona Surf Film Festival is all set to start December 2 and 3 at the beautiful Mauni Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows . Obviously we’d all love to be there to see all the top film submissions, but since most of us won’t be able to do that, we can at least watch the cool trailers. Here are some of the films that will screen under the stars at the 2011 Kona Festival: Come Hell Or High Water Keith Malloy brings us a new surf flick featuring Mark Cunningham, Dan Malloy and Mike Stewart. Hell or Highwater gives us a different – beardless – perspective on surfing. The film explores the history and progression of the sport of bodysurfing and the pureness that comes from riding a wave. While Malloy is most widely known for his time in the water as a surfer, his exploration into the world of bodysurfing began some 10 years ago when he wanted to reconnect with the ocean and did so through bodysurfing. It’s a journey over three plus years of reuniting and sharing the images capturing stories that unless told, would have been lost. On Saturday, the premiere surfing event, Vans Triple Crown of Surfing , begins on Oahu’s North Shore. That means the big, ginormous, monster waves of winter are on their way! If you’re going to Oahu between now and February, keep your eyes and ears tuned to the surf report. If the big waves are coming, then try to take a peek at the surfing action on the North Shore. The Banzai Pipeline is a great place to watch the expert surfers carve up the waves. If you’re lucky enough to catch one of the Vans competitions that are spread out over November and December, check out these useful spectator tips .
