
In April of 2009 the National Trust for Historic Preservation included Lanai City on its list of the eleven most endangered historic places in the United States. The National Trust considers Lanai City to be “the last remaining intact plantation town in Hawaii”. The Trust considers Lanai City to be endangered because the town owner has applied for a permit to tear down several historic buidings to make way for commercial development.
