Guest Post: Why We Chose Hawaii for Our Honeymoon
Today, we have a great guest post written by Rachael Garrison. She and her husband Eric have a website with cool Hawaii honeymoon planning ideas at My Hawaii Honeymoon . — It was one year before our wedding date, and we had all the basic wedding plans laid out: the dress, the ceremony, the caterer, the flowers…the list goes on and on as, I’m sure you are quite familiar! Once we had the wedding budget squared away, we realized, hey! Isn’t there usually a honeymoon involved with this whole thing? And so began the search for the perfect honeymoon vacation…. My husband started doing research, LOTS of research, since he’s definitely the one in the relationship who likes to spend heaps of time making sure that every purchase is well worth it (and the honeymoon certainly meets the criteria of a “purchase”). Originally, Hawaii was not at the top of our list… I mean, it seems like that’s what everyone does for their honeymoon. We prefer to do things a little differently when permissible, and the honeymoon would be no exception! We went over a few different trips that involved seeing as much of the surrounding area as possible. Honeymoons are supposed to be romantic and the idea of a long flight coupled with hopping from hotel to hotel sounded stressful; great for a random adventure… not so great for a romantic honeymoon vacation. Ultimately, we sat down and discussed exactly what we wanted out of our honeymoon. The key word we kept coming back to was relaxation . We envisioned ourselves being pampered, enjoying decadent food, luxurious hotel suites… the wedding planning was stressful enough, so why add any sort of worry to a vacation immediately following such a busy (albeit special) day? We then went back to Hawaii as just the word itself brings thoughts of paradise, palm trees and…the kicker…relaxation! It was difficult to choose which island, though! We learned that each is vastly different from one another in seemingly inconspicuous ways, but enough to change the vibe of an entire vacation. Did we want diverse Oahu, with its crowded Waikiki beaches? That was certainly the least expensive option. What about Maui, with its rich white sandy beaches? Or Kauai, where it’s ‘oh so quiet’? And we couldn’t forget our wish to see where the lava smolders into the sea on the Big Island. That’s when we heard about Hawaiian cruises that actually take you to each of those four islands, with a full day spent at each location plus ten days at sea. Even better, the cost of a cruise was well within our budget! We chose Princess Cruise Lines as they are known for cruises catered to couples of all ages (meaning, less kids!). Princess is a fantastic cruise line that offered every amenity we could dream of. Cruising to Hawaii was absolutely the best decision we could have ever made regarding our Hawaii honeymoon. We were pampered more than we had ever been in our lives. Each day on the islands was utterly amazing, as we had energy built up from being at sea for five days to expend doing and seeing as much as possible. We rented a car on each island and just explored. We even drove a complete circle around the Big Island, which allowed us to see both the Kona and Hilo regions. Now that we’ve gotten a taste of what Hawaii has to offer, we can’t wait to go back. On which island would we choose to stay? Surprisingly, Oahu! If you’re having any hesitation choosing Hawaii for your honeymoon, don’t! You will not regret the decision. An overwhelming number of honeymooners choose Hawaii for a reason, whether it be romance, natural beauty, or isolated decadence. Discuss with your partner what you want out of this vacation, and you may arrive at the same thing we did: a Hawaii honeymoon spent in ultimate relaxation. The Big Island recently became free of extreme drought for the first time in two years, but forecasters still expect below-normal rainfall levels through the fall. Tribune-Herald. Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed into law Thursday a two-year, $21.9 billion state budget that increases spending to pay higher Medicaid, public worker health care and debt service costs but leaves him with the responsibility for making significant cuts to state programs. Star-Advertiser. It was billed as "A Community Conversation with Governor Abercrombie." But to many in the overflow crowd who attended, it wasn't a conversation at all. Hawaii News Now. Another round of severe budget cuts is being drawn up by Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s administration, with department heads being asked to identify $50 million in “fiscal constraints” by early next month. Hawaii Reporter. By 6pm Thursday over 200 people had packed the Washington Middle School cafeteria wanting to hear from Governor Neil Abercrombie. KHON2. Pacific Business News For over 1,000 years, the Hawaiian people produced enough food to support an estimated population of one million. Today, 85 to 90 percent of Hawaii’s food is imported. Hawaii Independent. A state legislator says his vote against a fee for all single-use checkout bags is unrelated to his side job as a lobbyist for plastic companies. Civil Beat. Despite concerns over hungry homeless people, the state's 90 day plan is not changing. Hawaii News Now. A city-commissioned poll conducted last month showed that 57 percent of people on Oahu support the $5.3 billion rail transit project. Star-Advertiser. Hawaii's government is bringing in enough money to avoid additional spending cuts to programs and services, lawmakers said after receiving an updated report on the state's finances. Associated Press. A national public pensions expert says the changes Hawaii lawmakers approved for new state and county employees are in line with what other states are doing to reduce their pension liability. Civil Beat. Contracts for several public sector unions expire June 30 and so far only the Hawaii Government Employees Association has ratified terms of a new contract. KITV4. Ki'i statues keep guard at Puuhonua o Honaunau South of Kona along the coast, you’ll find Puuhonau o Honaunau National Historical Park that I highly recommend that you include in your Big Island vacation plans . Entry into the park is only $5 per car, so the value is very good. Touring this park gives you a glimpse back into Hawaiian history when the Hawaiian Kapu (laws) were in effect. From the park’s website, they provide an excellent explanation of the kapu system. In old Hawaii, if you had broken a law, the penalty was death. Perhaps you had entered into an area that was reserved for only the chiefs, or had eaten forbidden foods. Laws, or kapu, governed every aspect of Hawaiian society. The penalty for breaking these laws was certain death. Your only option for survival is to elude your pursuers and reach the nearest puuhonua, or place of refuge. Even Hawaiian sea turtles (honu) take refuge at the place of refuge. Since I originally wrote about visiting Puuhonau o Honaunau back in 2007, a cell phone audio tour has been added. The Hawaii Legislature is passing more than $600 million worth of tax increases on businesses, vehicles and personal income. Associated Press. After months of number crunching and heated debate, lawmakers passed a two-year state budget on Tuesday. They also voted on more than 100 bills. Hawaii News Now. The state House and Senate sent Gov. Neil Abercrombie yesterday a balanced budget and financial plan with some cushion to close a projected $1.3 billion deficit, but lawmakers have left little in reserve if the economy stagnates further. Star-Advertiser. Lawmakers passed the state budget today … with a unanimous vote in the House and a 24-to-one vote in the Senate. Hawaii Public Radio. Hawaii lawmakers just balanced the budget. Hawaii Independent. County Council members are looking at making deep cuts to the county budget proposed earlier this year by Mayor Alan Arakawa. Maui News. The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative announced Tuesday that it has received a petition that calls for a member vote on a decision made by the cooperative’s board of directors. Pacific Business News The Hawaii County Housing Agency took a step toward eliminating cash payments as a way for developers to earn affordable housing credits. West Hawaii Today. Molokai's own Capt.
