What to do in Honolulu/Oahu Memorial Day 2010

What to do in Honolulu/Oahu Memorial Day 2010

National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific (Punchbowl) Whether you’re a visitor to Oahu or an island resident, you’ll find plenty to do this Memorial day in Honolulu. Here are some suggestions of how to honor the day in meaningful ways: Visit the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific , also known as Punchbowl. This peaceful and somber site is a must visit in my opinion. On Memorial Day, Boy Scouts place a lei on each grave. If you can time your visit for 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 31, you can catch the 61st annual Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony. In addition to the impressive memorial, you’ll also find an tremendous view of Honolulu.Parking will be limited during the ceremony. (See our photo set from various visits to Punchbowl.) See the Arizona Memorial – Though there aren’t any specific events, visiting this memorial is certainly a worthy way to honor Memorial Day. I highly recommend that you get there early in the morning. Be prepared for your visit by reading Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor . Tour the USS Missouri - This retired battleship is also known as the Mighty Mo and also makes a great place to visit to honor the day. See my article with advice for touring the Mighty Mo . See the Pacific Aviation Museum in Pearl Harbor - This museum showcases aircraft that has been important to the US military history. See the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park in Pearl Harbor – The USS Bowfin was an attack vessel in WWII. The Bowfin was dubbed the Pearl Harbor Avenger. See the annual Lantern Floating Ceremony at Ala Moana Beach Park. “The ceremony remembers those who gave their lives in conflict, allows for reflection on the memories of loved ones and dedicates prayers for a peaceful and harmonious future. Just as the waters of the Pacific merge with each ocean, the wish for peace and happiness extends from Hawaii across the globe.” This event will be held Monday, May 31, 2010 at 6.30 p.m. on Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park. For more information see this link. Here’s a short YouTube video describing the significance of lantern floating. © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission. Hawaii in High Definition with Polarized Sunglasses

Hawaii in High Definition with Polarized Sunglasses

If you don’t already have a pair of polarized sunglasses, do yourself a favor and get some to bring on your Hawaii vacation. They really do make a difference. You know the phrase, “Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know”? Well that was the case with me until I had a chance to try polarized sunglasses for myself. Andy had a pair of polarized glasses and I noticed that sometimes he’d make comments about things he could see, but I couldn’t. Then Andy would let me try on his polarized glasses and I could see what he was seeing. Wow, what a difference! Polarized sunglasses are perfect for Hawaii because they cut down on the glare of the sun on the ocean and sand. When the glare is removed, you are able to see a greater depth of colors. Sometimes, polarized sunglasses help you see into the water, making coral and fish visible. Another advantage of polarized sunglasses is that it prevents your eyes from getting fatigued. So when you’re out driving and sightseeing, not only are you able to see more without glare, your eyes aren’t getting tired. The image below illustrates the difference between standard vision and polarized vision. (Image credit to 2020mag.com ). Quite a difference, eh? I think it’s a little bit exaggerated, but not too much. So, where do you purchase polarized sunglasses and how much do they cost? I’ve noticed that polarized sunglasses have become more widely available – even within the last year. I’ve found them at discount stores like Walmart and Target for under $20. I purchased mine from my local REI store on sale for less than $30. Designer glasses are more widely available in men’s styles. I’ve shopped for ladies designer glasses and the selection is very, very slim. When you are shopping for polarized glasses look for a sticker or tag that says they’re polarized. If it’s daytime when you are shopping, test glasses by looking though a window or around any surface that might reflect a glare. Have you tried polarized sunglasses? Are you a fan of them, too? Find more tips on what to pack for your Hawaii vacation . Please help us make Go Visit Hawaii even better by taking our quick reader survey . Your opinion matters. Kilauea sends lava through subdivision, surf’s up, lawmakers advance casinos, fireworks and legal marijuana, but snuff out cigarettes, more state news

Kilauea sends lava through subdivision, surf’s up, lawmakers advance casinos, fireworks and legal marijuana, but snuff out cigarettes, more state news

Fires are burning on the Big Island of Hawaii as a surge of lava pulses down slope through as many as six tubes, threatening the last remaining home in a neighborhood scorched by lava flows. Lava from Kílauea volcano once again has oozed through the mostly abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision, covering portions of the small open areas untouched by previous flows. A high surf warning is in effect for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai as well as north facing shores of Maui and west facing shores of the island of Hawaii. The warning is posted through 6:00 PM Thursday. Marijuana could be sold legally and have its own tax under a proposal approved Tuesday by a state Senate committee. Two state House committees on Tuesday killed a bill to allow customers to smoke in certain bars. A bill that could lead to casinos on Hawaiian Home Lands passed out of the state House Judiciary Committee, while a separate measure that would allow a single casino on O'ahu also advanced yesterday. Prospects for a statewide ban on fireworks dimmed yesterday after a state Senate committee chose to give counties the ability to opt out. Natural disasters were considered "low-probability events" four years ago when planning began here on a hazard preparedness training program, observed University of Hawaii professor Karl Kim. Spending and visitor arrivals for the Honolulu Marathon have remained at a good pace, with participants spending more than $100 million for the fifth year in a row, despite the tourism industry languishing in a cool-down period. Residents hoping to visit the incredible natural wonders around the Captain Cook Monument in Kealakekua Bay will soon need to apply for a free permit from the state to land their kayaks. Statistics about infant health and mortality can be a weathervane when it comes to predicting future trends in the health of the general population, a state health official says. Honolulu real estate developer and broker Chris Lau has been appointed commissioner to sell the Makena Beach and Golf Resort, which was foreclosed last year. The auction probably will be scheduled for April. A trio of bills that could go a long way toward curtailing unintended land uses and promoting agriculture on the Garden Isle have piled up on the Kaua‘i County Council’s to-do list.
