Aloha Friday Photo: Kauai North Shore Edition

Today’s Aloha Friday Photo was taken by Karl Moss on his very recent trip to Kauai with his wife. Karl says he believes this photo is from Wainiha Bay off of Highway 560 on Kauai’s North Shore. I love that Karl composed this photo with flanking Ironwood Trees. And, that little section of golden sand is calling me to plop on it. Is it calling you, too? Mahalo to Karl for sharing his Kauai vacation photo with us. © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission. Most of Hawaii’s Rain Falls at Night

Most of Hawaii’s Rain Falls at Night

Well, here’s one for your did-you-know-file. I’ve been told a few times that most of Hawaii’s rain falls at night. I had been somewhat skeptical when I heard that, though I had noticed this to be true on our very first visit to Kauai . During our first stay in the Princeville area, rain poured almost every night, but when morning came, we enjoyed beautiful clear skies. We had one brief afternoon shower which produced the rainbow in the following photo. Out of curiosity, I decided to do a bit of research. As I was looking for credible sources, I came across this exceptionally descriptive detail of Hawaii’s climate from the Western Regional Climate Center which delivers climate services to national weather agencies like NOAA. To support the theory that most of Hawaii’s rain falls at night, I found this excellent excerpt: “In the lowlands at all times of the year, rainfall is most likely to occur during the nighttime or in the morning hours and least likely to occur during mid-afternoon. Correspondingly, not only is rainfall more frequent at night, but also the total nighttime fall averages more than the total daytime fall when the two 12-hour periods are compared.” So, it’s true that most rain does indeed fall at night in Hawaii. Isn’t that interesting? What has been your experience with rain when you’ve visited Hawaii? © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission. Go Visit Hawaii Celebrates 4th Blogaversary

Time sure does fly when you’re having fun. I’ve had a blast writing our award-winning Hawaii travel advice on GoVisitHawaii.com. As we celebrate our 4th blogaversary, it’s hard to believe we’re entering our fifth year – that’s, like, ancient in blog years. To celebrate the day, let’s all pretend we’re having a slice of Hula Pie in Hawaii. Just looking at our Hula Pie photo on the right brings back happy memories. We took that photo in 2004 during our first visit to Kauai . At the time, we had no idea that three years later, we’d be sharing that photo in our Hula Pie blog post . What a blessing it’s been to visit Hawaii and be able to share honest, practical vacation tips.

Kauai’s Hanalei Bay

Kauai’s Hanalei Bay

As you’re making your Kauai vacation plans, make sure you get up to the North Shore to see Hanalei Bay. This bay is not only one of the most beautiful points  in Kauai, but also in Hawaii as a whole. View Larger Map Here, I love the rugged green cliffs framing in the many shades of ocean blue and white sand beaches surrounding the bay. Sure, Kauai has loads of beautiful beaches, but Hanalei offers a bit more for your eye to enjoy. The mountains look like sculptures guarding Hanalei Bay and Valley. As a former engineer, I often struggle to write well enough to adequately describe Hawaii’s most scenic places. (We engineers are notorious for being bad writers. ) So, I’ll let some of our photos do the rest of the talking for me. Hanalei Pier Panoramic view from Princeville of Hanalei Bay Hanalei Beach is popular with both locals and visitors. Here's a "busy" Sunday afternoon view of the beach at Hanalei. Video: Swimming at Sacred/Secret Falls

There’s something almost magical about swimming at the base of a Hawaiian waterfall. I love hearing the sound of the water cascading down the rocks, while floating in the refreshingly chilled pool. It’s a marvelous experience. On our most recent trip to Kauai , we kayaked up the Wailua River and then hiked to Sacred (Secret) Falls for a swim and lunch. While we were there, Andy captured this video of the waterfall as he was swimming at the base. Hopefully, it will give you a glimpse into the experience of swimming at a Hawaiian waterfall. (Email subscribers, please click here to access this waterfall video .) Have you experienced swimming at the base of a waterfall in Hawaii? How would you describe your experience? © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission. Kauai Connections in 2011 Movies

There’s no doubt that Hollywood loves the picturesque island of Kauai . Over the years, Kauai has been a filming location in more than 60 movies and TV productions. This year,  the Garden Isle will be making appearances once again in these upcoming movies. Just Go with It is a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. It will be released on February 11. Here’s the trailer . Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Tides sails into theaters on May 20 using Kauai’s and Oahu’s landscape as the backdrop to this adventure film. Here is the preview . The Descendants, starring George Clooney, is a film based on the popular novel by Hawaii author Kaui Hart Hemmings. According to IMDB, the story-line is a “land baron tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife suffers a boating accident.” There’s no release date or trailer yet for this 2011 movie, but I do know that parts of the movie were filmed at the gorgeous St. Regis Princeville . The reason that I know is that I got to observe the production crew setting up for a scene in the lobby back in April 2010. Here’s a photo of that lobby that will likely be included in the movie. Will you be going to the theaters to catch any of these movies with Kauai connections? © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission.
