As I looked through the recent photos we shot in Maui , I was drawn to some of our our macro photos. I wanted to share the things of Maui that inspired these macro shots. This unique protea bloom from the Kula Botanical Garden really put on a show. We could have easily gotten lost in the thicket of bamboo from the Pipiwai Trail. A palm loaded with coconuts caught our eye near Hana. No matter how many times we’ve been to Maui, beautiful hibiscus blooms always capture our attention… … and a fragrant plumeria tree does, too. Sometimes our food is so good, we must get a photo. For example, we loved the Steamed Pork Buns from Star Noodle in Lahaina. Colorful, yummy Hawaiian papaya satisfies the eyes and taste buds. It’s not everyday that you get to have coconut milk based ice cream served in a coconut shell with a spoon carved out of a coconut shell. At the end of an action-filled day, it was nice to sip a

Overall, Hawaii is a safe vacation destination. As we discussed in the 8 Myths of Hawaii Five-O article, Hawaii’s crime rate is low. You don’t have to worry about stumbling upon scary snakes in Hawaii , including poisonous snakes. The most vicious critter you might encounter is a mosquito. That’s my kind of destination! With all that said, you do need to take care and avoid certain situations on your Hawaii vacation. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the more common safety hazards that tourists might encounter. OCEAN SAFETY Hawaii’s beautiful blue ocean waters can sometimes appear to be deceivingly safe. I highly recommend that you check Hawaii Beach Safety website before you plan your swimming and snorkeling activities . This excellent site provides real-time beach alerts, list of recommended beaches and a list of beaches with lifeguards. Some other ocean safety tips and ditties to keep in mind: Never turn your back to the ocean . When you are swimming or even waking by the shoreline, you never know when a strong wave might sneak up on you. So it’s best to be watching the ocean and aware. Actually, this very sad news of a missing tourist at Nakalele Blow Hole on Maui prompted me to write this entire post. He had his back to the ocean when he was knocked by a large wave. If in doubt, don’t go out . If you aren’t sure of the conditions, please don’t go out. Check for posted safety signs . Avoid swimming at night, dawn and dusk . Why then? Well, that’s when sharks tend to be the most aggressive and active. On Oahu, Box jellyfish usually arrive to the near shore approximately 7 to 11 days after the full moon of each month. From my advice for watching Haleakala sunrise , I recommend that you map out your directions at least a day before you plan to go. Otherwise, you’ll be fumbling around for directions in the dark while you’re only half awake. That’s a recipe for getting lost in a hurry. In theory, getting to the summit of Haleakala sounds easy peasy. In my opinion, it’s not as easy as it seems. Though, we’ve been to Haleakala for sunrise multiple times, we still sometimes wonder if we’re headed in the right direction. Driving in the deep dark of the night just adds to the challenge. The last time we drove to Haleakala for sunrise, we temporarily parked at the Visitors Center. We had a brief argument discussion whether we were in the correct spot or not. I’m not going to say who was right or wrong but I asked Andy to humor me and continue drive a bit further, because I could faintly see that we hadn’t reached the summit. Well, he did and then we reached the summit. To help clear confusion. Andy created this brilliant custom Google map identifying the summit parking lot. From this map you can enter your starting point to generate your personalized directions to the summit. (Disclaimer: Please note that the summit parking lot is accurately identified, however, sometimes Google directions may not be 100% accurate.) The prime sunrise viewing point is at the summit. - After you’ve found the correct parking area, you’ll need to find a short trail that leads you to the a hexagonal-shaped shelter. You can see that shelter in the satalite-view in the custom Google Map. - Use a GPS Navigation System if you have one. Hawaii State Department of Health officials announced Thursday that a large quantity of storm water and landfill waste was discharged from the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill into ocean waters between Ko Olina and the Kahe Power Plant.
