In the spirit of Earth Day, I thought I’d recycle an Earth Day post from the past . Caring for Hawaii’s sea life is still very important. Let’s consider the very important topic of protecting Hawaii’s reefs, fish, and marine mammals when you visit. This entertaining video with excellent underwater footage is narrated by a fish. Last week, we looked at some of the top ways to save money on Hawaii vacations . What will you do with those savings? Stay longer? Stash it away so that you can return to Hawaii sooner? Maybe one way you might allocate those savings is spend it on a memorable splurge. In my experience, I’ve found that there are splurges that are worth the cost. Why do I think they are worth the cost? I can answer that question in one word — memories. I treasure memories of special experiences in Hawaii far more than any souvenir I’ve ever purchased. So, what’s worth the splurge in Hawaii? Based on my experience, I can recommend the following: Helicopter Tours – If you think seeing Hawaii from the ground is amazing, just wait until you get a bird’s eye view of the mountains, craters, cliffs and waterfalls. Most Hawaii helicopter tours hover past remote areas that you couldn’t see from the major roads and trails. A helicopter tour in Hawaii will give you a whole new perspective of the islands. A view of the Na Pali Coast like this one is only possible with a Kauai helicopter tour. Private Dinner for Two – Whether you are celebrating a honeymoon, marriage milestone or simply want to celebrate romance with your sweetie, share a special ocean-side dinner for a memorable experience. Many of the 4 and 5-star resorts will offer private dining options in a secluded garden spot or by the ocean. Andy and I have enjoyed a couple of private dinners in Hawaii. One was at a poolside cabana at the Westin Princeville Resort . The other was an oceanside hale (cabana) at the Four Seasons Lanai at Manele Bay . As I’m writing this post, I’ve just caught myself virtually and euphorically whisked off to that oceanside hale dinner. The privacy and scenery along with the delicious dinner was truly exceptional. Our private dining experience at the Four Seasons Lanai will forever been a blissful memory. Spa Treatments –The Aloha State hosts several top-notch spas where you can indulge in a massage by the ocean or surrounded by tropical gardens. For those celebrating romance in Hawaii , consider a couples massage in one of those special settings. I almost always try to plan in a spa treatment when I visit Hawaii. What spas are worth the splurge? I’ll list my top picks based on my experiences so far. On Maui I thoroughly enjoyed Spa Grande at the Grand Wailea , On Kauai I love Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. The spa at Lanai’s Four Seasons at Manele Bay was delightful. On the Big Island, we like Mauna Lani’s spa . I’ve not found a spa on Oahu that I love as much as the others I’ve mentioned. I must continue with that quest.. Oh the hardships I must endure to be able to tell you what’s the best! A massage with a sunset view! Kealakekua Bay snorkeling on the Big Island was one of our best snorkeling experiences. Snorkel Tours – You can certainly save money by snorkeling just off the shorelines around Hawaii, but in my experience, snorkel tours are well worth the expense. The tour companies can take you to remote areas that you can’t access offshore. The water around Hawaii can appear deceivingly safe when it is not. So, there’s an added component of expertise and safety that tour companies offer versus doing it yourself. I recommend choosing a tour on a small catamaran for a little touch of luxury. Andy and I often reflect over our Hawaii travels and fondly remember experiences. Sometimes, Andy will recall the time he held an octopus on a Kohala Coast snorkel tour Another time I might say, “Remember when we had that oceanside private dinner on Lanai?” We have never regretted these splurges. What other Hawaii vacation splurges have you found to be memorable? © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission. Kaanapali Beach, Maui Hawaii can be an expensive vacation destination, but it doesn’t have to be! Your accommodations will likely be the most expensive component of your vacation budget, but you can trim those costs with the money savings ideas. 1. Go to Hawaii when the rates are down. During low seasons you’ll find great rates and/or enticements such as one night free, resort credits and free breakfast for two. As I mention in my recommendations for the best times to visit Hawaii , hotel rates are usually at their lowest during these timeframes: April (except around Easter) May (except around Memorial Day) September (after Labor Day) October November (except around Thanksgiving) December before the 20th of the month You get the best hotel deals during those periods because demand is typically down for various reasons (which is worth explaining in a separate post.) I’d like to note that these times are not bad times to visit Hawaii. 2. Stay in Hawaii’s value centers . Value centers? Well, that’s a nicer way of describing the cheapest areas of Hawaii. These areas are plenty nice, but they’re just less expensive than some of the other major resort areas. I’ll list these value centers by island. Oahu – Waikiki Beach is one of the cheapest places to stay in all of Hawaii. Opt for a hotel that’s “across the street (Kalakaua Avenue) from Waikiki Beach” for an oceanfront feel for less than the oceanfront cost. For even more savings stay a block or two away from the beach. You don’t necessarily need a rental car for your Waikiki vacation, but if you do rent a car, please be aware that parking can be both a challenge and a sizeable expense. See my post on finding free and reasonable parking in Waikiki . Kauai – Kapaa and Lihue on Kauai’s east coast offer quite a few value priced hotels and condos. You’ll also find a very good selection of inexpensive condos in the Poipu Beach area on the sunny south shore. Big Island – Kona hotels and condos tend to be inexpensive. For an inexpensive vacation on the luxurious Kohala Coast, consider condos in the Waikoloa Beach Resort . Maui – The Valley Isle can be a bit trickier for finding inexpensive accommodations. Look for condos in Kihei, Lahaina and Kaanapali areas. Lanai – This little Hawaiian Island is loaded with luxury and you can have it all at your fingertips for bargain! You can stay in Lanai City’s historic inn ( Hotel Lanai ) for about $100 per night. Perhaps the very best luxury value in all of Hawaii is at the swank Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Koele – take advantage of their third night free offer and pay as little as$197 per night. 3. Consider a vacation condo or villa rental instead of a hotel . See my article Why Staying in a Condo on a Hawaii Vacation is a Savvy Choice which details obvious plus hidden ways that you can save bucket-loads of money on your Hawaii vacation. You’ll pay rates roughly equal to (and sometime less than) hotel rates, while enjoying more privacy, space and use of a full kitchen while on vacation. Fancy schmancy swimming pool at Waikoloa's Hali'i Kai vacation villa resort 4. Consider combining airfare and/or car rental for more packaged savings. If you have the time and inclination for online comparison shopping, consider packaging your hotel room with other major vacation expenses. Online discount travel sites like Expedia , Travelocity and Hotwire will usually offer more savings in those situations. To make sure you’re getting the savings, it’s best to check the prices of each individual component for comparison. 5. Use hotel bidding sites. If you don’t mind getting a pot luck hotel room, use travel bidding sites like Priceline and Hotwire to get rock bottom hotel rates. I’ve not personally used any of the hotel bidding sites, but my friend Kyle has. A couple years ago, he used Priceline to snag a sweet deal at the Marriott Waikoloa on the Big Island for only $125 per night. At that time, the lowest advertised rate anywhere else was going for $209. When using hotel bidding sites, Kyle recommends reviewing betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com for advice. Kyle says that at these sites, “People share their bidding strategies and “victories,” so you can sometimes get a sense of what you might be successful with.” Kyle said, “I have never been disappointed with my Priceline reservations, although I usually only try for three-star properties and above (usually four-star only in a place like Hawaii or a major city), so that might have something to do with it. I honestly feel that without Priceline there would be times that I would have had to cancel a planned trip, or at least cut back a few days, because of the cost–there’s just so much potential for saving.” 6. Beware of resort fees and parking as you comparison shop. As you’re shopping around for your Hawaii accommodation, make sure you compare apples to apples. Some resorts charge a daily resort fee of $15 and up. These fees supposedly cover items like fitness center use, in-room coffee maker and supplies, parking, etc – amenities that may be included in the rates of other hotels. Look for hotels that offer free self-parking. You’ll save a bundle in valet fees and tips. Make sure you know the parking options and fees of a resort before you book – particularly if you are staying in Oahu. 7. Consider alternative accommodations – hostels and camping. Can you believe a stay at Hawaii’s most iconic beach resort can cost as little as $13.16 per night? You can get a deal like that at the Waikiki Beachside Hostel , for example. To begin to look at hostels, check out TripAdvisor’s specialty lodging on each island. Camping in Hawaii offers another alternative for inexpensive stays – approximately $18 per night for up to 6 persons. You can even camp right on the beach at some parks. For Hawaii camping information and permits, see this link to Hawaii State Parks. 8. Subscribe to Go Visit Hawaii. Here on GoVisitHawaii.com, I list the best of the best accommodation deals that I find. If you aren’t already subscribed, read this article for the instructions on how to get your free daily updates. —– To help you determine if you’ve found a good accommodation deal, here are the most recent average hotel rates per this Pacific Business Journal article . Oahu average $179 per night Big Island average $224 per night Kauai average $235 per night Maui average $322 per night While those rates will fluctuate throughout the year, Maui always has the most expensive average rate while Oahu consistently offers the cheapest average rate. I hope that you’ve found new strategies and ideas to help you save money on your Hawaii accommodations. My wish is that these strategies will get you to Hawaii more often than you’d imagine is possible.

Andy and I loved the Polynesian Cultural Center’s long-running show Horizons . As I wrote in my review of Horizons back in 2007: We saw this evening show on our first full day of our recent trip to Oahu. We had flown to Hawaii from the East Coast the day before and we were extremely jet lagged. We had had a full day touring the islands of the center and taking part in the Ali’i Luau . By the time the show started, it was well past our bedtime at home. So, we were a little concerned that when the lights dimmed for the show, that we might end up watching the back of our eye lids instead of the show. Our concerns were not warranted because the show captured our attention the entire time. Not only were we wide awake watching the show, but when we got back to our hotel at the Turtle Bay Resort , we kept awake for a while talking about how great the show was. So, when we learned that Horizons was being replaced by a new show, HA: Breath of Life , in August 2009, we wondered why would the Polynesian Cultural Center change a show that was already spectacular. I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? When HA: Breath of Life debuted, I kept hearing how much people enjoyed it – both local residents and visitors. It’s not easy to create a show that strikes a chord with locals and visitors, but HA does. When we had the opportunity to return to Oahu in October, one of the first things that popped in my mind was, “We’ve got to see HA !” So, we made our plans for this short, five-day visit, making sure we got to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Photo courtesy of Polynesia.com We thought HA was outstanding. This spectacular Polynesian show has all the bells and whistles of a top notch Broadway or West End show, but with the warmth and pageantry of all the major Polynesian cultures. HA features more than 100 performers, live music, colorful Polynesian-inspired costumes, a stage that’s approximately 60ft tall, and fire – lots of dramatic scenes using fire. I believe I counted about 10 Samoan fireknife dances at one point — an illuminating display! All the cast, music, choreography, and technical features of the show help to make HA excellent entertainment, but HA ’s story is what makes it so memorable. The show centers on Mana, following his life and his family. With each stage of Mana’s life, we journey to a different Polynesian island chain, with aspects of each culture beautifully woven into the story. If I remember correctly, the Polynesian journey goes through Tonga, Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, Tahiti and Fiji. I don’t want to give too much of the storyline away. I will say this, don’t be surprised if a tear wells up in your eye. To help you gain a better idea of what to expect from the show, here’s a short YouTube video produced by the Polynesian Cultural Center. (Email subscribers, use this link to access the video.) Andy prepared a nice video with scenes from the show shot from our seats. The previous video was professionally produced, so please don’t compare the quality of our video with clips from the show. (Email subscribers, please click here to see our own video.) HA: Breath of Life shows every Monday through Saturday evening with the exceptions of Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The open-air venue is covered, so you don’t have to worry about getting wet if it rains. The Polynesian Cultural Center offers a variety of packages including admission to the show. The lowest priced package is $60 for adults and $45 per child. That package includes entrance to see all the Polynesian villages, free buffet dinner, and general admission to HA . Some packages include guided-tours, upgraded meal plans and better show seating. In my opinion, the Ali’i Luau ticket package is a really good value at $88 per adult and $64 per child. The Ali’i package comes with a luau and preferred show seating as well as access to the Polynesian villages and cultural presentations. See this link to compare ticket packages . I’ve seen many Polynesian shows and HA: Breath of Life is truly outstanding. I don’t believe there’s another Polynesian show anywhere that’s on par with the magnitude of HA’s production. I highly recommend it. Have you seen HA: Breath of Life ? What was your impression of the show? © Go Visit Hawaii – Republication of this entire post is prohibited without prior permission. Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. To honor the day, I’m sharing photos of the somber wall of names listing those who died on the USS Arizona that fateful day on December 7, 1941. This wall of names is located on the far end of the USS Arizona Memorial in an open room of its own. To walk towards that massive wall and see the volume of names carved in marble is shocking. I think it’s human nature to feel detached from history, but when you see these names, history is humanized. I’ve visited this memorial several times. On each occasion I’ve noticed other visitors take their whispers to silence as they stare at the memorial while absorbing its meaning. When you visit Oahu, I highly recommend you take the time to go see the USS Arizona Memorial where every day is a day to remember Pearl Harbor. We’re on facebook!
